For the past couple of years, Rhonda has been honing the craft of letterpress printing. She works on an antique Vandercook 4 letterpress from the 1950s.

She was recently a part of the Art of Circus: A Letterpress Slideshow at Studio 204 in Arlington which is currently highlighted on the Felt and Wire blog.

She designed and printed a wonderful collection of circus-style letters and uber cool animals including; a monkey, a lion, and an elephant. She is third from the left with fellow letterpress artists at the show – clearly, a fun time was had by all!

With a graphic design background, Rhonda designs everything from logos and posters to baby announcements and greeting cards -- she does her own illustration and printing. Click on the images below to read more about her work and to visit her etsy shop.

Her work can be found locally at Paper & Chocolate in the same shopping center as the Inwood theater as well as The Soda Gallery in the Bishop Arts District.

Rhonda joined Etsy Dallas this year and will be a vendor at the Etsy Dallas Spring Bash on May 16 -- stop by and see her work in person!

Eco•Ideas: Bead for Life

It's always feels good to purchase something beautiful that can help someone else in the process. This is part of what makes Bead for Life such a great idea. It's a program that connects U.S. consumers with a group of women beaders in Uganda who are working at escaping poverty. Check out their site and be sure to read the "meet the beaders" section of the site to get to know those multifaceted hard working beaders.

Before the Bead for Life program, many of the beaders were unemployed or worked for very low wages in rock quarries -- living on less than a dollar a day. This program provides a way for them to make a living and afford things we take for granted like a home and uniforms to send their children to school in. These women undergo training to learn how to make paper beads as well as how to run a small business. Bead for Life is a Fair Trade Federation member working toward equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creating opportunities to alleviate poverty.

Check out this how-to-roll-paper-beads tutorial on their site - learn to recycle magazines and out of date calendars into beads.

Member Spotlight: Midnight Snack

This week's Etsy Dallas Member Spotlight is on Midnight Snack, your source for handmade pillows, clothing & accessories.

Christina is the creative brain & talent behind the scenes. She has lived in the Dallas area all of her life and has created for as long as she can remember. She made her first "craft tower" when she was just 5 years old. It was full of glitter, popsicle sticks, fuzzy pom poms, and all the fun kids' craft supplies. Wow, Christina....crafty & organized...we are impressed!

In college, Christina used crafting as a way to de-stress and take her mind off of school. Hmm, when I was in college, I could have really used her "Hands off My Chocolate" plush to avoid the "freshman 10"!!

She really started to enjoy making hand made gifts around this time. Christina and her husband have been a part of the handmade movement for a while. They have exchanged handmade gifts with each other ever since they started dating - even when most of her friends thought it was weird. Yeah, Christina we know...y'all were hip before your friends even knew it!

Christina likes to surround herself with creative people whenever she can. It really helps her understand her own process by witnessing how others work out their own craft. Her husband is creative and artistic, and they help each other constantly with projects and bounce ideas off of each other. Christina says, "It is fantastic to have someone around who constantly pushes you to perfect your ideas."

Midnight Snack was started out of a desperate need for a dog bed to keep Christina's chihuahua, Stanley, away from her nice sofa pillows. She made him a giant steak shaped fleece floor pillow and he loved it. That sparked her interest in making plushes and since Stanley didn't need an abundance of beds she started putting her other creations online, marking the beginning of Midnight Snack.

The business has since evolved into hand sewn, appliqued clothing and accessories, and most recently into decoupaged jewelry. Sewing is Christina's true love. "I'll always feel most satisfied after making a new plush creation!" Well Christina, this "Piece of Cake" plush couldn't satisfy my sweet tooth more!!

Christina will be at the Spring Bash on May 16th and hopes you'll stop on by the Midnight Snack table and see her amazing creations.

Eco•Ideas: Finding Green Inspiration

Green crafting sometimes needs a little inspiration to get things percolating. The use of ordinary things in unsual ways to give them a second, third or fourth purpose.

This book, Cool Green Stuff by Dave Evans, is the perfect place to start. It's a picture book of inspirational material for crafters and artists -- eye candy. It's even printed on FSC certified paper. It has everything from computer keyboard purses to grocery cart chairs to measuring tape brooches. Some of the artist's are even fellow Etsians.

Although this book does not have DIY instructions for specific items, it has excellent photography on the majority of pages and even better upcycling ideas. Each page has a link to the artist's web page where you can read about the people who created these cool things and see what else they're up to.

Happy Reading!

Member Spotlight: Om Clay Artist

Jill Whitfill creates and sells gorgeous Asian influenced pottery on Etsy under the business name, Om Clay Artist. Her experiences as a hospice nurse have made her keenly aware of the delicate nature of life. As a result, Jill strives to make every moment count. Art allows her to be connected with the Earth and to herself in a wonderful and peaceful way.

Jill has always enjoyed all aspects of art. As a child, she fondly remember art classes in school, and creating own homespun creations only appreciated by my family. As an adult she studied Asian art forms and admired the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and Greene and Greene. She finds beauty and grace in the minimalist design and use of natural colors in these works. On vacation to New Mexico about 7 years ago she had the great fortune to meet Betsy Williams who is a renowned potter. Jill fell in love with her work and story; Betsy left a comfortable job to live in Japan for 5 years to study under a great pottery master. What courage! Jill was inspired by Betsy to see art more deeply, and possibly professional pursuit from woodworking and woodturning.

When a shoulder injury forced Jill to give up working with wood, she was inspired by Betty's influence and set out on a new journey. She enrolled at a local community college and was hooked! She has also studied with Janet Rodriguez another wonderful potter, business woman and community leader. Along with this training she has done several workshops with well known potters.

Jill really enjoys working with clay ; she loves the quietness and meditative aspects of throwing.. It has has helped her focus and express herself through clay art.

Clay has a way of letting you know whether you’re ready for a serious workday or not, and I’ve found that a sense of humor really helps.

She enjoys being a small business owner and gets involved in the community by sharing, teaching and learning. Please check out more of her work at Rimrock View Studio.
